In about a decade the personal computer, or PC, would become well established in many businesses and a growing number of homes. After another decade, it became almost as ubiquitous as TV sets and microwaves. Parallel developments in hardware, software, operating systems, and accessory devices made this revolution possible. The first commercial “personal computer” was the MITS Altair, a microcomputer kit built around an Intel 8080 microprocessor. Building the kit required considerable skill with electronics assembly, but enthusiasts (including a young Bill Gates) were soon writing software and designing add-on modules for the kit. A
